Officers of the Church
Lynnwood OPC is a Presbyterian congregation. This simply means that it is lead by a group of elders. Christ alone is the head of the church, and the leaders of the church together work in submission to him and to one another. No single individual-whether a Pope, a Bishop, or a charismatic Protestant pastor-can claim to be the chief leader in a church.
Just as Christ himself has the threefold office of prophet, priest, and king, so too the church has three kinds of officers.
- First, God has given the church pastors to proclaim the word of the Lord to feed God's people with the bread of heaven (2 Tim. 4:1-4).
- Second, he has also given his church elders to rule the church as sacrificial servants, encouraging and exhorting God's people to devote themselves to Christ and his people (1 Pet. 5:1-4).
- Finally, he has given the church deacons to tend to the physical needs of God's people in the name of Christ and in accordance with his word (Acts 6:1-7).
The elders together constitute a session that meets on a monthly basis with the deacons to address the spiritual needs and concerns of God's people. The deacons also meet separately on a regular basis as they oversee the care and provision of those in need.
